The Elizabeth Stone House of Roxbury is teaming with the Boston Blades Professional Women’s Hockey Team to help raise needed funds and bring awareness to domestic violence issues that affect local families.  The Elizabeth Stone House (ESH) is a family shelter and community support center for families who are survivors of domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health issues and homelessness.

The Boston Blades team will host a hockey game against the Montreal Stars and part of the proceeds will support important programs and services provided by the Elizabeth Stone House.  The game will take place on Sunday, January 13th at 1:35 PM at the Veterans Memorial Arena on 570 Somerville Ave. in Somerville. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.  The Boston Blades have generously agreed to donate a percentage of all ticket sales to the Elizabeth Stone House.

“We are thrilled to partner with The Boston Blades and be able to offer a fun event that can be enjoyed by local families,” said Nancy Owens Hess, Executive Director of The Elizabeth Stone House. “We are overwhelmed by their extreme generosity to donate a portion of their ticket sales to support our programs for families in need.”

“As a local women’s sports team, we have always supported our local communities and issues that face them,” said Boston Blades Manager and Head Coach, Digit Murphy.  “We are proud to be able to support worthy organizations like the Elizabeth Stone House, and all that they do to help local families struggling with domestic violence and other issues.”

The City of Somerville took over administration of this state-owned ice rink in fall 2010, and immediately introduced more public skate times and programs including hockey lessons and league play for both youths and adults. The rink sits in the middle of Conway Park on Somerville Avenue.

Public skating is free and as of 1/2/11, skate rentals were just $6. A snack bar is open daily and an on-site pro shop offers skate sharpening.

FUN TIP: The rink hosts birthday parties as well.
