Outdoor Seating Coming to The Independent in Union Square

The outdoor seating area could be in place by the end of June.

The Independent, a restaurant in Union Square, is likely getting some outdoor tables. The Somerville Board of Aldermen approved a permit for the outdoor dining area on May 9. Ken Kelly, owner of the Independent, said the permit still needs final approval from the state's Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, and he's hoping to have outdoor tables ready by the end of June. The area would include 20 tables and 48 seats. On special occasions, such as Union Square's FluffFest, it would be able to accomodate 68 seats, Kelly said. He said the area would be built on a wooden deck and would look similar to the outdoor seating that exists at nearby Precinct.

The Washington D.C.-based falafel and Middle Eastern restaurant is opening in the site formerly occupied by Diva Lounge.

Amsterdam Falafelshop, which is moving into Davis Square, is getting close to being finished. The Somerville Board of Aldermen Thursday night approved a permit for the restaurant's sign and awning. Walking by, one can see that construction is well under way. The falafel shop is moving into 248 Elm St., the site recently occupied by Diva Lounge. Union Square Post Office Officially on Market for $2.5 Million

The city is interested in seeing the building become a performing arts center, but it doesn't have plans to acquire the property on its own for that purpose.

The United States Postal Service, which over a year ago announced it would seek to sell the Union Square Post Office, officially put the building on the market a couple of weeks ago, according to an email from Dennis Tarmey, a spokesperson for the Post Office. The building, which opened in 1936, according to Tarmey, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is on the market for $2.5 million. The lobby of the building contains original murals painted by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. The Post Office is not planning to close Union Square as a location, Tarmey emphasized in his email. Rather, the postal service is looking to sell the current building at 237 Washington St. and maintain a "retail …

Stop the nonsense! Let's create the most economically viable operation to contribute to the City's tax base. A performing Arts Center is not even in the top 100 ideas that would bring that to the fore. The homeowners and commercial taxpayers would like City Hall to stop being so generous with the assets that can be developed to contribute to the common cause.   more ›

Somerville Patch Readers Want Food Trucks, Food Trucks Want to Operate at Night

The desire for food trucks in Somerville may be greater than food trucks' desire to operate in Somerville, at least during the day.

As the Somerville Board of Aldermen work to draft an ordinance to govern food trucks in the city, residents and food truck operators are weighing in on what they'd like to see in Somerville. Somerville Patch ran a poll asking readers if they want food trucks in the city. As of Wednesday afternoon, about 73 percent of respondents said they want food trucks. About 20 percent said, "Maybe. It depends on where they are and what they're doing," and 6 percent said, "No. They're not right for a place like Somerville." If residents are eagar to have food trucks, food trucks are also eager to come to Somerville, but only at certain times. "What we want to do is to vend from eleven to two [at night] on nice summer evenings in Union and Davis Square …

I would love it if Staff Meal came to Union at night! I had Chinese sausage taco with foie kewpie during the food truck festival, and I'd love to be able to get hat or similar things in my neighborhood on a more regular basis. Please come to union, there is nothing open after 11!   more ›
