I got pulled away from blogging about the history of Somerville and Cambridge's Camp Cameron. I did not stop my research though. My original idea was to do a 150 years ago today format, so I have some catching up to do. I will try to do several quick entries.
Today, I will start of with correcting some things I stated already that new research has shown not to be true. First off, I stated that Gov. Andrew came to the flag raising ceremony at the camp. He was schedualed to attended and make a speech, but other business pulled him away on he day of the event. (1) The next correction is the size of the camp. It was much smaller than I once believed. I had gone with a qoute from the Cambridge Chronicle. Several things made me begin to doubt it. I did a few very rough measurements on the map myself and then I found another contemporary newspaper account in the Boston Evening Transcript of Jun 11, 1861 that put the size at only forty acres, which is much closer to what I had estimated.
