As you may remember, I’ve challenged myself to have a new goal for each month 2012. I kicked this challenge off with the goal to declutter my living space. So in January I let go of 31 unnecessary items, one for each day of the month. I have a tendency to hold on to things for way too long, so this was the perfect goal to start my new year off right. I tackled this challenge head on. I made 3 piles in my living room: one marked trash, one marked donate and one marked recycle. Each day I chose an item and placed it in one of the 3 piles. And boy did I find a lot of unnecessary stuff hanging around.
So what were some of the highlights of my declutter project?
Day 1: Runner's World Magazines from 2010 taking up valuable space. (recycle)
Day 5: My Walkman. It’s broken and even if it weren’t, who listens to cassette tapes anymore? (trash)
Day 10: Not one, but two broken DVD players just collecting dust. (recycle)
Day 19: A stack of owner’s manuals for items that I no longer own, including the Sony Walkman I threw away on the 5th. (recycle)
Day 21: Five empty cell phone boxes. I had a rough couple of years during which I either lost or dropped my Driod 5 times. And why did I hold on to the boxes? I have no idea. (recycle)

At the start of my project I was a little anxious at the thought of getting rid of 31 things. I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time letting go of stuff. But in the end I was glad I did it; it turned out to be a great exercise in simplifying my life. I started February off with a clear mind and a tidy apartment. Here are some of the benefits I gained by decluttering my living space.
- Less stress: The sight of clutter can be a visual distraction and add to mental stress. It’s a constant reminder of what I have yet to do (clean my closets, tidy my living space, get rid of my junk). As long as the clutter is around so is the stress.
- More space: Less clutter means more space for living, working and entertaining.
- More attractive: My apartment just looks nicer without the unnecessary clutter.
- More time: Without the clutter I can easily find what I’m looking for. No more wasted time sifting through papers, boxes or tearing up my closet looking for something I need.
- Increased productivity: Less distraction means that I’m able to work more efficiently and focus on the task at hand.
- Peaceful living: An uncluttered home creates a serine environment where I can sit back, relax and enjoy life.
- Satisfaction: Knowing that those who are less fortunate will benefit from my declutter project gives me great satisfaction. My donations will be given to Second Chances in Somerville.
It is mid February and I’m already 2 weeks into my next goal. This time it’s fitness related. I’ve been selected to participate in the EmpowHER Bodymedia FITness Challenge. I, along with 5 other bloggers, will wear the Bodymedia Armband for 6 weeks; 7 days a week for 23 hours a day. The armband will track our progress with our fitness goals. My goal is to take 13,000 steps a day and be active for at least 2.5 hours throughout the day. So far it’s going really well. I’ve been able to keep up with (and surpass) my goals. My motivation comes from knowing that you all will be watching my every step!
Now as I mentioned this is a 6 week challenge which will take me through mid March. Having said that, 13,000 steps and 2.5 hours of activity a day will be my goal for both February and March. I will follow back up with you then to let you know what’s in store for April.
