Weekly Outdoor Wine and Cheese Market Coming to Union Square

The "Swirl & Slice" market will take place Thursday evenings and will feature wine, cheese and specialty foods.

Mimi Graney, executive director of , described it as the kind of place where you can get "whatever you'd have in a picnic basket."

She's talking about Union Square's newest farmers market, dubbed "Swirl & Slice," which will take place Thursday evenings throughout the summer.

The market will feature Massachusetts wines, cheeses, breads, cured meats, jams, pickles and other specialty foods.

Swirl & Spice

Graney said the idea for the market stemmed from the success of the , which takes place Saturday mornings from late spring into the fall, and a fairly recent Massachusetts law that allows wine producers to bring their wines to farmers markets. The Saturday market attracted applications from a number of local wine and cheese producers, and Union Square Main Streets realized there was enough interest for a separate market.

The Swirl & Slice market will take place in the Union Square plaza from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays between June 14 and Sept. 20.

It will feature about six local wineries, six local cheese producers and about eight producers of other specialty foods and products—breads, cured meats and cut flowers, for example.

"We're also planning on having formal tasting events," said Graney. Visitors might be able to sample Massachusetts chardonnays or various cheeses, for instance.

A romantic vibe

"We're hoping to have a house jazz band," she said. That, plus lit trees and open patios at nearby restaurants will give the market a bit of a romantic feel.

Union Square Main Streets is also thinking of partnering with the , which hosts outdoor movies during the summer, so that market-goers can buy food and then have a picnic while watching a film. Also, the might plan some of it's international food-store tours for Thursday evenings to partake in the festivities.

Union Square Main Streets is still accepting applications for vendors until April 15, Graney said. Anyone interested should contact the organization.
