Sandra Bullock movie crew rolls into town
A new Sandra Bullock movie, The Heat, was filming near Inman Square at the end of this week, and Beacon Street in Somerville was a staging area for the film crew's trucks and equipment.
Man dies in Somerville jail
A 52-year-old homeless man died in a jail cell at the Somerville Police Station Monday. The Middlesex District Attorney's office was looking into the death, saying there were no signs of foul play or trauma. On Friday, the DA's office was waiting for results of an autopsy before deciding how to proceed with the case.
Union Square Rising pulls out of mediation process
Union Square Rising, a group that opposes an affordable housing development proposed in Union Square, decided to pull out of city-sponsored mediation that was intended to soothe bitter tensions connected to the proposal. The group said there was a conflict of interest with the firm hired to do the mediation.
More Hubway stations coming soon
Somerville, along with Cambridge, Boston and Brookline, celebrated the expansion of the region's Hubway bike sharing system Wednesday. Somerville will eventually have 12 Hubway stations. Three were installed in early August, and more are coming in a matter of weeks.
Davis Square streetscape improvements
At a meeting Tuesday night, the city, traffic planners, residents and local businesses discussed possible improvements to Davis Square's streets and sidewalks. Just how to make those improvements is a matter of much debate.
Porter Street fire
A fire at 22 Porter St. Wednesday displaced about six people, according to the Somerville Fire Department. The fire was between the first floor and a basement wall, and there was a substantial amount of smoke and water damage.
Lincoln Park renovations
The city is considering a $2.7 million rehabilitation to Lincoln Park, near the Argenziano School. The rehabilitation could include adding artificial turf, a seasonal ice rink and a field house.
