Wal-Mart to Open Grocery Store In Somerville
The huge retail company will open its first Northeast grocery store in Assembly Square, according to the Boston Globe.
Wal-Mart, known for its giant mega-stores and low prices, is opening a grocery store in Somerville's Assembly Square, the Boston Globe reports.
The Somerville location will constitute Wal-Mart's first grocery store in the Northeast, according to the Globe.
The company is expected to move into the former Circuit City space on Mystic Avenue, the Globe reports.
This location is next to the Assembly Square Home Depot.
What's coming to Somerville is not a typical Wal-Mart store, one of those huge warehouse-like places where one can buy electronics, tools, camping gear, clothes and almost anything else.
Rather, Wal-Mart Market, as the grocery store will be called, is strictly a food store.

Wal-Mart is notorious for damage done to communities and terrible treatment of employees! I have boycotted all Wal-Mart stores for many years due to this. Why are they being allowed to come to Somerville at all? Jodie

I agree with Jody and also note that Market Basket in Union Sq, locally owned and hiring workers from our diverse community could be adversely affected.

Carol, Steve and Lisa:
Wal*Mart decided not to build here in Somerville at all, because they know that they're not welcome...and with ample reason.

Wal*Mart building a grocery store in Somerville after all? That really takes the cake, and is beyond disgraceful. They'll put other grocery stores in Somerville out of Business, and screw a city and its people, with its lousy merchandise and rotten labor policies.
Mayor Curtatone, as a 24-year-resident of this city, I expected better of you. That's a disgrace.
