Besides talking about the city's little-known bicycle registry and the possibility of having a Complete Streets policy here, the Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee packed a number of updates and announcements into the agenda for their August 16 meeting. 

New Powderhouse patterned U-racks arrive this fall

Somerville should receive 75 bicycle racks and three bicycle corrals this fall, said Nikhil Nadkarni, an intern with the city who is serving as a liaison between the Bicycle Committee and the mayor's office. 

Diesel Cafe, in Davis Square, and its sister location, Bloc 11, in Union Square, will receive on-street corrals that will hold 14 bicycles each. 

The city is still looking for a third business to receive a corral. Committee member Ron Newman said that the weekend crowd at Ball Square could use one, and other members suggested installing the it in Union Square because of the need for additional bicycle parking. 

Hubway

The city will probably not install a Hubway station on Somerville Avenue, Nadkarni said. 

That would leave Porter Square without a station for at least a couple of years, he said, until Cambridge builds one on its side of the square.

Somerville plans have other stations in Davis Square, Union Square and at City Hall, the intersection of Beacon and Washington streets and Conway Park. 

Forthcoming group rides

The "Tour de Somerville" will leave Seven Hills Park, in Davis Square, Saturday, Oct. 15 at 10:30 a.m. 

And on Saturday, Sept. 24, Somerville Climate Action and Moving Planet will host a ride at 2 p.m., leaving from Union Square. Participants will ride along the Freedom Trail while promoting "freedom from fossil fuels" and end up at the North Station T stop. The event is for experienced, adult riders, according to the listing. 

Spring bicycle and pedestrian count to be delivered this month

The city should present the results of the spring count of bicyclists and pedestrians around Somerville in September, Nadkarni said.  

Volunteers and members of the Bicycle Committee this April and May counted the number of bicyclists and pedestrians who passed by more than 30 locations over six days. The count helps the city decide where to paint bicycle lanes and install racks.
