Tickets Available for Sept. 18 Foodie Crawl
The Foodie Crawl in East Somerville takes place Sept. 18. Here's some information about it.
Last year, the inaugural Foodie Crawl in East Somerville drew large crowds. East Somerville Main Streets is running the event again. It takes place Sept. 18, and here's some information, sent by East Somerville Main Streets:
Think You Know Somerville Cuisine. Think Again.
Foodie Crawl to Feature Unusual Local Bites.
SOMERVILLE – Think you know Somerville Cuisine? Think again. This September those with an adventurous spirit and a curious palate will hit the streets for the Second Annual East Broadway Foodie Crawl. The event winds ‘crawlers’ through the small locally owned restaurants of Somerville’s East Broadway Business District – leading people to taste foods they didn’t even know existed.
East Somerville Main Streets led over 1200 people on this cultural crawl last year – and this year promises to be even better. “Through organizing this event, I have learned so much about food” said East Somerville Main Streets’ Executive Director Carrie Dancy, “even after working here for years, there is always a new dish to discover!”
The East Broadway Business District offers is home to some of the city’s best restaurants, serving trademark authentic food: it has everything from Vinny’s Restaurant –a Somerville’s magnet for foodies - to Fasika Ethiopian, where you could have caught the Ethiopian Marathon team a few years back.
Crawl stops also feature some of the best deals in town. Mt Vernon, another participating restaurant offers weekly deals, especially on seafood. “They had twin lobster for around $10! I couldn’t believe it” said Somervillian Matt Martino.
And the event has a mission to boot. East Somerville Main Streets is committed to building a safe, sustainable and prosperous multicultural community by developing a vibrant business district at the neighborhood’s heart – and all proceeds from the event will forward this goal. “Community starts at the heart – in the neighborhood cross roads. The Foodie Crawl encourages people to come together as a community,” said Kat Johnson, Somerville resident and Board President of East Somerville Main Streets.
This year’s event will also expand on the City of Somerville’s reputation as the healthiest city around. With new partnerships with Bon’App, the ‘better calorie counter’ mobile app, and Shape Up Somerville, the City’s healthy living initiative, participants will not only benefit from vegetarian options, but will be able to check nutrition values on the fly and eat some “Shape Up Approved” menu options. The hopes by the City are that this will not only be a great outing for its citizens but inspire them to cook healthy, flavorful, and nutritious meals at home.
Topping off this tasty affair are three after parties! “We want people to stick around and enjoy themselves after all that crawling – and no good food event could be over without dessert!” said Dancy. The Dessert After Parties will be kicking off at Vinny’s, Casey’s and Fasika with sponsorship by Coldwell Banker, J. Murray and Sons and Cambridge ReproGraphics. Each party will offer unique local desserts and live music.
Also partnering in the event is Assembly Row. As construction on their first residential units begin, Assembly Row is partnering in events in their neck of the woods that highlight the progress in the entire eastern half of Somerville.
Tickets for the Foodie Crawl are on sale now. You can buy them for $20 both online and in stores at Sullivan Square Liquors – 30 Broadway and Davis Squared – 409 Highland Ave. $25 at the door if there are still tickets, the event sold out last year and is expected to do so again.
