Three Things for Saturday: Handmade Arts, Ball Field Fun and Biking the Mystic
On July 30 Union Square hosts a crafts market, a Davis Square park reopens with fun activities, and there's a bike tour of Mystic River trails.
Looking for Something to do Saturday? Consider the following options:
Boston Handmade Marketplace
This open-air marketplace in Union Square will feature artwork and crafts by New England artists and artisans. They'll be selling clothes, home goods, jewelry, art, ceramics, blown glass and a bunch of other great stuff. If you want something unique, quirky and local to adorn your home or person (and maybe your dog), this is your chance to get it. There will also be live music, crafts demonstrations and activities. The marketplace is from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The rain date is July 31.
Hodgkins Park ball field opening ceremony
If you've walked by the Hodgkins-Curtin ball field on Holland Avenue, just outside Davis Square, you've likely asked yourself, "Why is no one playing there?"
Well, the playground was renovated and reopened in 2010, but grass on the ball field needed an entire season set properly.
Now it's ready. There will be an opening ceremony at the ball field at 10 a.m., which includes the cutting of a ribbon. There will be refreshments, and after the ceremony, kids will be able to participate in mini little league games, relay races, big-ball volleyball, inflatable basketball and a football throwing contest, among other things.
The ceremony and events are free and open to the public.
Biking the Mystic
The Mystic River Watershed Association is hosting a bicycle tour of trails near the river. The trails are featured in the association's new Urban Trail Map and Activity Guide, which is available on the association's website for $5.
Saturday's tour begins at 10 a.m., and you must register ahead of time to participate. Cyclists will meet at Torbert MacDonald Memorial Park on the wrong side of the river in Medford.
