Student-Run Highlander Cafe Opens to Public Thursday

The lunch cafe provides industry experience to culinary arts students and has some of the best prices in Somerville.

There's a new restaurant option in town.

The Highlander Cafe, which is run by Somerville High School students, opens to the public on Thursday.

The cafe is managed by students in the high school's culinary arts program, and in addition to giving students experience in the food service industry, the Highlander Cafe has some of the most reasonable lunch prices in the city.

For its first week, for instance, the menu includes French onion soup for $1.95, a Buffalo chicken salad for $4.95 and steak teriyaki served on a bed of rice for $5.75.

A side of vegetables or starch costs 95 cents, and the cafe also prepares frozen dinners—things like baked haddock and chicken piccatta, served with vegetables—for $5. A quart of red bean chili will set you back $3. Not bad.

The Highlander Cafe, which is at the high school, will be open for lunch from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. You can eat there or order something for pickup. Call (617) 625-6600 x6232 to order ahead. You can also visit www.somerville.k12.ma.us./cafe to make reservations.
