Somerville Patch Readers Want Trader Joe's, More Restaurants
We asked, "What business would you like to see open in Somerville in 2013?" Here's what some of you said.
To celebrate the new year, we asked, "What business would you like to see open in Somerville in 2013?"
Here's what you said:
- Trader Joe's—Three of you want one, especially in the old Star Market and Johnnie's Foodmaster sites, which are now vacant.
- Olive Garden—"So many in Somerville really want this," said AHM.
- A holistic veterinarian—Nancy said, "With such an informed and progressive community (with lots of pets!), it would be nice to have a vet who offers a more holistic approach to nutrition and health."
- "Breakfast place in Magoun Square," Courtney O'Keefe wrote.
- "Red Sauce" Italian restaurant—Courtney P. Snyder commented that Union Square needs "the kind of place you can stroll to have pasta (or pizza) bottle Chianti and go home happy."
- "Cool shops, art galleries, fun pubs, small business & less chains"—Especially in Winter Hill, said Jennifer D.

I would like to know why anybody would want an Olive Garden in this city when we have "REAL" Italian restaurants that serve authentic Italian food... not the crap that the Olive Garden calls "real" Italian !

Because people have different tastes, I have many people I know who go there with their families and would like one close by, this is a large numebr of people, I am deal with many people here and this is what they tell me. These are older long time residents. I personally have never been in one myself. But the city needs to cater to the large majority of the people as well as the others. We have a mix of people here who want what they like. Myself, I have ony 2 places in Somerville that I go to, one is Mount Vernon and the other is the 99. There is not another sit down place in Somerville that I care for, but other people do.

Trader Joe's website has an area to suggest a new location. There's power in numbers. Winter Hill star Market is a perfect location. Let's do it!

I would love a Trader Joe's in Somerville...I was really surprised when it was reported that the Star Market space was 'too small' for them - the Boylston St TJ's is the size of a shoebox! Seems like the old Star Market would be a great location...
Also - I'd like a coffee shop (not Dunkins or Starbucks) in East Somerville off Broadway. Union Sq. has some nice non-chain coffee places - I'd like to see more on Winter Hill & East Somerville.
Brunch places in Magoun/Winter Hill/East Somerville are some great ideas, too.
I'm excited to see what Assembly Square brings...hopefully some interesting places and not your standard chains.

What about bringing in a food coop market to Somerville? I agree diversity in the (food) market place is key but why not do more local sourcing of foods and partnerships with farms through this food coop model. Cambrdige has a couple and they do quite fine I believe. I am sure it is a matter of a financial investment and having the funds to purchase the building, etc but I have been curious why there is not one in the ' Ville. I feel it would thrive. Perhaps in a smaller space but why is there not one at all? Hmm.

Last decent shoe store in Somerville was the modern soe store which had a fire. The 2 brothers just didn't think it was worth it to get started again. They had a lot of good stock left that was not harmed but was stolen while the store was being guarded. Just Kmart and Target now. I expect Assembly may get one but it will be high end for sure and nothing we can afford.

With the transformation of lower Broadway, I hope that we can bring in more deverse stores, such as a shoe store, a store for kids, ie candy etc, flower shop. That is what we need besides salons and restaurants. I am excited with all that is happening in east somerville ward 1.

As for restaurants, I know someone who recently visited the newly-opened Burger Dive at Assembly Square. It cost $40.00 for 2 people. This is why some people would like something along the lines of an Olive Garden. All of the new places in the city are too expensive, especially for families. We need a nice, casual, family place where you can go out for a bite without breaking the bank.

It's just to let you know we are not welcome in that part of town. The stores restaurants and apartments are priced to keep us lowly Somerville residents out of there. Thank you Joe and the Mystic Task Force.
