Somerville Area T Stops Saw Crime Increase in 2011

The increase was largely driven by larcenies. Bike thefts are a particular concern.

According to statistics released recently by the MBTA, T stations in and around Somerville saw an increase in serious crime last year.

Davis Square Station

At Davis Square Station, there were 23 Part I crimes reported in 2011, compared to 12 in 2010.

Part I crimes are the most serious crimes—homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, vehicle theft and arson.

That 92 percent jump in serious crime was led almost entirely by an increase in larcenies: 21 in 2011 as compared to 11 in 2010. There was one assault in 2011 and one robbery. In 2010, there was one robbery.

Porter Square Station

At Porter Square Station, just across the Somerville line in Cambridge, there were nine serious crimes reported in 2011, compared to six in 2010. Again, the slight increase came from larcenies.

Sullivan Square Station

Sullivan Square Station, near the Somerville border in Charlestown, saw 19 serious crimes in 2011, compared to seven in 2010.

In this case, there was an increase in crime across categories: There were six robberies, eight larcenies, four assaults and a burglary. By comparison, in 2010, Sullivan Square saw two auto thefts, a burglary, two larcenies and two robberies.

Alewife Station

A bit farther afield, Alewife Station, in Cambridge, came in at number five on the MBTA's list of stations with the most crime, with 34 Part I crimes reported in 2011.

However, that's an improvement for Alewife, which was number two on the list on 2010, with 43 crimes reported. As with elsewhere on the T, larcenies were the primary crime at that station.

South Station had the most crimes last year (62) and in 2010 (74).

Harvard Station

Harvard saw 12 crimes in 2011 (one assault, 10 larcenies, one robbery), compared to five in 2010 (two assaults, one larceny, two robberies).

Across the T
