Signs Will Make City's Bicycle Friendliness Better Known to Public

Plus other news from the Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee's December meeting.

New signs will soon greet pedestrians, cyclists and drivers as they enter Somerville to let them know that the city is a "bicycle friendly community."

The city has received two signs inscribed with that message from the League of American Bicyclists, which awarded Somerville the distinction earlier this year for its expansion of bike paths, campaigns to promote cycling and other initiatives.

The committee decided that the signs should be placed at entrances into the city with high levels of traffic so that as many people as possible could see them. Members suggested that one go on Broadway, on the Arlington-Somerville city line, and the second where Cambridge's Hampshire Street turns into Beacon Street, in Inman Square.

Members asked Sarah Spicer, the transportation planner who delivered the news about the signs, to find out whether or not more could be available.

More portals for online bicycle registration and work for people who want better bicycling near McGrath

  • The Police Department has added a link on its website to the city's online bicycle registration form
  • Wondering if the state plans to spend any of the $14 million devoted to repairing the McGrath Highway on making cycling safer in the corridor? Residents will have to strongly recommend that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation connect bicycle lanes like they did for the recently repainted crosswalks, according to Spicer. Committee member Tim Talun said that he would like to see the bicycle infrastructure at the intersections of Washington Street and McGrath and Somerville Avenue and McGrath improved.
