Roxy's Grilled Cheese Food Truck Coming to Union Square Thursday Nights

Supporters of food trucks in Somerville hope it will showcase what they consider their benefits.

As the Somerville Board of Aldermen debates regulations for food trucks in the city, one notable truck, Roxy's Gourmet Grilled Cheese, will be making weekly stops in Union Square starting in mid August.

The popular grilled cheese food truck, which was runner up in the Food Network's "The Great Food Truck Race," will be stationed at the Swirl & Slice Market Thursday nights starting on Aug. 16, according to both Mimi Graney, executive director of Union Square Main Streets, and a Roxy's Facebook post.

Roxy's will serve grilled cheese at the Thursday market for a few weeks, and then Union Square Main Streets, which runs the market, will invite another food truck to operate there for a few weeks.

Not "your grandma's grilled cheese"

On its website, Roxy's says, "We don't make your grandma's grilled cheese." The food truck serves sandwiches like the "Green Muenster Melt," which is muenster cheese, homemade guacamole and applewood bacon, and the "Mighty Rib Melt"—fontina, braised short ribs, caramelized onions.

Its hand-cut truffle fries are a thing of legend among some regulars.

Graney said Roxy's uses local ingredients in its sandwiches.

Testing the waters

In a broader context, considering the Board of Aldermen has been debating whether or not food trucks are right for Somerville, Graney said Union Square Main Streets and the city invited Roxy's to Somerville as part of a small, somewhat informal pilot program.

Graney, who has blogged on Somerville Patch about her support of food trucks, hopes Roxy's will showcase what she considers the benefits of welcoming trucks to the city.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone also supports a welcoming environment for food trucks.

Some aldermen have voiced concerns about possible impacts on the local brick-and-mortar restaurant community.

What food truck do you want on Thursdays?

Roxy's will spend a few Thursday evenings in Union Square, and then the Swirl & Slice Market will host another truck. That truck hasn't been determined yet. If there's a local food truck you'd like to see in Union Square, let us know in the comments section.

We're pleased to report that we have our second food truck for the September dates at Swirl and Slice. We're thrilled to welcome Left's Silver Cart, serving up vegetarian fare with an emphasis on local ingredients. http://www.leftyssilvercart.com/
