Poll: Are You Sad IKEA Isn't Coming to Somerville?
Some were devastated, others were glad. On Thursday, IKEA announced it wasn't planning to build a store in Somerville. What do you think?
It didn't come as a shock, but it came as a disappointment to some.
On Thursday, IKEA officially announced it was pulling the plug on plans to build a store in Somerville.
On Twitter, @msmarfinkle wrote, "I'm slightly devastated." And @midlakewinter said, "But, but … lingonberries?!"
Others took the news a different way. Another Twitter user, @randomhookup, wrote, "Didn't really want them anyway," and @wheres_laura commented, "I'll continue my tradition of never shopping there."
So, where do you stand? Are you sad IKEA isn't coming to Somerville? Were you hoping to spend your weekends assembling entire bedroom sets with a small allen wrench? Or are you glad the giant box store isn't coming to Somerville?

IKEA: The more I think about it, the more I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, sure, it's nice to have a furniture store nearby, and yet, on the other hand, there's enough of a traffic problem on I-93 and in the Assembly Square area to begin with, and having an IKEA Store in that area would generate even more traffic, which we definitely don't need.

The reasons why one would be disappointing are flawed. I'm not disappointed because i can no longer shop there rather that the town is loosing out on the economic activity - new jobs, new tax revenue, point of interest and differentiation for assembly sq.
Being able to shop there is a convenience issue for me - I have a car and when i really want to I drive down to Stoughton.

I haven't had one prediction come true since 2008 when I predicted, the night before the election, that Obama would win. I now feel like I can go home tonight and have a couple. January 2012 story on Patch about IKEA coming, I made my prediction. And got myself in hot water with certain folks.
Actually, the hot water is good for my old hockey knees. My next prediction of who IKEA will sell the land to is still in development. Maybe after a couple tonight, I'll have a few suggestions.
Too bad our fortune teller left Magoun Square. Coudda used her right about now.

If you shop selectively, their merchandise is functional, durable, and reasonably priced. The design of many products is geared to small spaces, reflecting its European orientation. A couple of years ago, I took advantage of a summer-time promotion of kitchen furnishings and appliances. I have a very small kitchen but was able to make maximum use of the available space with IKEA cabinets, fixtures, and appliances (refrigerator, microwave, stove, and dishwasher). The cabinets are mid-line and constructed with wood veneer that is holding up beautifully. The appliances have been flawless. So Stoughton got the benefit of my purchase. Wish it had been Somerville. I think Matt C nailed the real adverse impact of this decision on Somerville: the loss of economic activity for the city, and loss of a unique retailer whose products are tailor made for the area's huge student population. Several years ago, IKEA built a large store just off campus of the University of Maryland that has been a phenomenal success. Too bad for us not to have been more farsighted to support and encourage an alternative to the ubiquitous Target and Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Wish I could shop at Crate & Barrel, but they are way beyond my means.

A Whole Foods or a Trader Joe's would be cool. The only trouble with Whole Foods, however, is that they're way overpriced.

I disagree with the idea that Whole Foods is overpriced. I think the quality of their stuff is so much higher than most grocery stores that it's worth it. If, however, you can't really afford it, I've found that if you stick to the less expensive "365 house brand" items and only shop for sale items it costs about the same as a regular store. The problem is to not get tempted to buy a lot of the fabulous cheeses or pastries or other fantastic specialty items and that's really hard. I make it a point to never shop on an empty stomach! LOL!

As for the"365" brands of food, I've found that some of it is okay, but not the milk. So, I always buy the 1% Garelick...no exception, and, if I can't find it at Whole Foods, I'll go elsewhere for it.

And the good thing is you can buy Garelick's everywhere!
I'm also a huge Trader Joe's fan, but I don't know if their milk meets your approval! There isn't really a good place to shop in Somerville. I love Dave's Fresh Pasta and liked Kick Ass Cupcake's Dairy Bar, but it's closed. Thank goodness there are good stores so close by in Cambridge. It would be nice to spend all those food dollars in Somerville.
