Police: Laughing Man Hits Cop With Hyundai
A Somerville man drove at two officers who were on a traffic detail, a police report says. He was ultimately pepper sprayed and arrested.
A 23-year-old Somerville man nearly ran over two police officers and hit one of them with the car's driver-side mirror, according to a Somerville police report.
The man, Adam Scott of 8 Fisk Ave., was laughing while he drove at the cops, the report says.
According to the report, two officers were on paid detail at about 12:20 a.m. on Aug. 15. and they were directing traffic near the intersection of Medford Street and Broadway as work crews painted a crosswalk.
All of a sudden, a white 2004 Hyundai came up Medford Street and passed four other vehicles that were stopped for the work crew, the report says.
One of the officers tried to stop the car, but the driver didn't stop and the officer had to jump out of the way, according to the report.
The car continued driving toward a second officer, who tried to jump out of the way but was hit by the car's driver-side mirror, the report says. The officer who was hit said he saw the driver laughing along with three passengers in the car.
"The driver intentionally drove at me forcing me to try and jump out of the vehicle's path to avoid being struck," the officer wrote in the police report.
The officer radioed the car's license plate number, and the driver was stopped on Morrison Avenue.
The officer who was hit responded to Morrison Avenue and ordered Scott out of the car, but he refused and slapped the officer's hands away, the report says.
The officer then sprayed Scott with pepper spray, and Scott was arrested and handcuffed, according to the report.
The report says the car's driver-side mirror had marks from hitting the officer's gun belt.
Scott was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and failure to stop for police.
