PHOTOS: Giving Away Turkeys, Fixings At Elizabeth Peabody House
Somerville's Elizabeth Peabody House gave away 360 turkeys this year, in addition to Thanksgiving fixings, to provide a Thanksgiving meals to about 1400 to 1600 people.
"If we're putting a meal on a family's table and a smile on a family's face, we're happy," said Selvin L. Chambers III, executive director of the Elizabeth Peabody House in Somerville.
The organization, which provides an array of childhood education and family services to people in Somerville, celebrated its third annual Elizabeth Peabody House Annual Food Drive Tuesday.
The organization gave away 360 turkeys to families in Somerville, said Paul Kuhune, resource and outreach coordinator at the Elizabeth Peabody House. It also gave away all the fixings, such as potatoes, bread, vegetables and stuffing.
In all, the holiday food drive will provide meals to between 1400 and 1600 people, Chambers said.
Frank and Debbie Ward were two Somerville residents who received a turkey. "I'm so excited," Debbie said upon receiving a turkey. Frank said that, these days, "All the money goes to rent," and he was thrilled to receive fixings in addition to the turkey.
"We do this fully in partnership with other agencies," Chambers said. This year, ARAMARK Building Community, Food for Free, the Somerville Homeless Coalition, The Greater Boston Food Bank, Stop & Shop and Farmer Dave's, among others, participated in the Somerville food drive.
"We're just happy we're able to do this in the community," said Chambers.
