Patch reader Sarah Hassan captured these photos of a hawk in Somerville that had caught a rat.
The hawk held the dead rodent under its talons at Edward Leathers Community Park, in the heart of the city.
It looks like a pretty big rat.
Hassan said she was with her mother when the hawk flew out of some bushes.
It flew away when someone passed by.
Hassan also photographed the splotch of blood left behind.

Somerville Patch reader Sarah Hassan recently captured these amazing photos of a hawk with a dead rat in its talons.

Hassan said in an email she took the photos at about 5:15 p.m. on Oct. 24 when she was at Edward Leathers Community Park with her mother.

Edward Leathers Park, not far from City Hall, Somerville High School and the library, has a play area for children, a dog run, and space for people to sit on benches and walk.

Hassan said she and her mother saw the hawk when it suddenly flew out of some bushes with the rat. When someone passed by the bird, it flew off, she said.

She also took photos of the blood splotches left behind by the kill.
