Photos From Somerville Students' White House Visit

Five students from the Healey School in Somerville visited the White House. Again. Here are some photos.

If they visit again it might be time to discuss making a spare key.

Five kids from the Healey School in Somerville recently made their second visit to the White House in less than two months.

The kids, Ariana Docanto, Gaby Lopez, Sarah Sweeting, Brian Chan and Lana Popovic, returned to the White House on May 28 to visit with First Lady Michelle Obama and help harvest produce from the White House Kitchen Garden—produce they had planted earlier in the year.

Chris Mancini of Groundwork Somerville, Healey School Principal Jill Geiser and Susana H. Morgan, from the Somerville School District, also made the trip.

The Somerville students were invited to the White House because they have experience working on the Healey School garden, which is the sort of thing encouraged by Mrs. Obama's Let's Move campaign to encourage healthier eating and lifestyles.

Groundwork Somerville helps the school district manage and maintain gardens, including the Healy School garden, and the organization also helps run a curriculum about growing food, which teaches kids about biology, chemistry, healthy eating and, well, getting your hands dirty and accomplishing something tangible.

After harvesting vegetables at the White House, the Somerville group made flatbread veggie pizzas and ate lunch with Mrs. Obama on picnic tables in the garden.
