Outdoor Seating Coming to The Independent in Union Square

The outdoor seating area could be in place by the end of June.

The Independent, a restaurant in Union Square, is likely getting some outdoor tables.

The Somerville Board of Aldermen approved a permit for the outdoor dining area on May 9.

Ken Kelly, owner of the Independent, said the permit still needs final approval from the state's Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, and he's hoping to have outdoor tables ready by the end of June.

The area would include 20 tables and 48 seats. On special occasions, such as Union Square's FluffFest, it would be able to accomodate 68 seats, Kelly said.

He said the area would be built on a wooden deck and would look similar to the outdoor seating that exists at nearby Precinct.

What they don"t mention is that it will be in the parking lot in front of the restaurant taking away parking spaces and a loading zone.

@MaryB - you'd rather have parking spots than an patio??

Great news! We don't have enough outdoor eating areas in Somerville. Can't wait to sit there with a cool beer on a hot day.
