Girls Who Rock

Three members of the Girls Who Rock after-school music club recently showed off their vocal and instrumental performance prowess at the Edgerly School.

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: The members of Girls Who Rock

School: East Somerville Community School

Accomplishment: Three of the girls performed two songs they wrote at an after-school music and dance programs showcase at the Edgerly School.

How they did it: Since September, the girls have met twice weekly to listen to female-rock musicians, learn how to play instruments, sing and write their own songs. Their art teacher, Charlotte Huffman, runs the after-school music program. Huffman participated in Ladies Rock Camp Boston 2011, where she got the idea to have the girls scream, "I rock" eight times at each meeting.

The program recently received $1,000 from Chick Singers Night Boston. They stretched the money far, buying two guitars, amplifiers, microphones, a bass guitar, drum set, keyboard and loudspeakers.

To prepare for their performance, they filmed music videos, made 'zines, band T-shirts and album covers.

Wendy Majano-Guevara, 11, sang the Girls Who Rock theme song and "Shame On You," a song about bullying.

Strawberry-blonde Ruby Electra Riley Jackson, 11, sang and played drums during the performance. She listens to British pop-star Lily Allen, also plays guitar and electric bass and will attend the Girls Rock Camp Boston this summer.

Meira May Downie, 11, also sang at the performance. She listens to indie rock group Arcade Fire and plays cello, piano and acoustic guitar.
