Football and Track Star Headed to Ivy League School

Kevin Wint intends to study architecture and play football for University of Pennsylvania.

Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Kevin Wint, 18

School: Somerville High School

Accomplishments: After four years of working hard at school and sports, Wint will attend University of Pennsylvania this fall. He also received two scholarships Tuesday during the high school's athletics awards night.

How he did it: Throughout high school, Wint took the most challenging classes available to him, his guidance counselor, Cathy Wood, said. At the same time, he played sports year-round: football in the fall and track and field in the winter and spring. But he said his demanding schedule disciplined him.

"I knew if I wanted to play certain things, he said, "I had to get work done."

Wint, who was named a Greater Boston League All Star for football this year, said his mother and his two siblings pushed him to study and get good grades.

"I had a lot of support and motivation to keep up my work," he said.

Wint also looked up to his brother and sister for being Somerville Highlanders. Junior varsity football coach Joe Vilaine said that before Wint started high school, he would go to his brother's practices to watch, chase balls and even suggest plays. Then when Wint started playing football freshman year, Vilaine said he would work out intensely to stay in top form.

"He's a legacy," Vilaine said.

Since his junior year, Wint has studied drafting through the school's Center for Career and Technical Education, and he said he would like to study architecture at University of Pennsylvania.

"I always wanted to draw, and it’s nice that I’m not just putting it on a piece of paper," he said. "It’s something that people can live in and work in. It’s more than just pure art in that sense."

Though University of Pennsylvania didn't recruit Wint to play football, he plans to try out for the team.

Coach Vilaine believes Wint has a good chance of making it. "I would never, ever count Kevin out of anything," he said.
