Five Things to Do This Weekend
A writers festival, theater at The Burren and the library, Christmas bazaars and a citywide cleanup top the weekend calendar.
The Somerville News Writers Festival, daytime theater at The Burren and the library, two Christmas bazaars and Groundwork Somerville's first ever Green-a-Thon (citywide cleanup) top the weekend calendar.
Join Groundwork Somerville's first ever Green-a-Thon.
Volunteer crews will conduct four simultaneous clean-ups at four spots in the city on Sunday (10 a.m.-2 p.m.). All are invited to join in to help remove trash and leaves from the site. For info, please see out Event listing here.
Support Pets in Need--at party and auction
But first, before you head anywhere else on Friday night, stop by the Pets in Need Silent Auction at the Dilboy VFW (7-9 p.m.). Loads of gift cards, sports memorabilia, museum passes and more will be auctioned. Admission and hors d'oeuvres are free. The bar is cash. Music will be live. And all proceeds go to caring for homeless pets. For more info, click here.
Feed your love of words at the Somerville News Writers Festival.
Now in its eighth year, this festival featuring local scribes and poets leads the way in helping our city's bookworms think globally, but read locally. On Saturday, a daytime Book Fair (11-4:30) kicks off the event, and readings (7 p.m.) by the likes of Steve Almond and Jennifer Haigh will fill the evening. For more info, please see our event listings here and here.
Dive into the holiday bazaar season at two events this weekend.
Both St. Catherine's on Summer St. and Little Sisters of the Poor on Highland Ave. hold their annual Christmas Bazaars this weekend. You'll find handmade gifts and crafts, new household wares and small appliances, holiday items, jewelry, home-baked treats, raffles and more. St. Catherine's bazaar is today (2-9 p.m.) and Sat. (9 a.m.-2 p.m.). The Little Sisters host their bazaar Sat. (9 a.m.-4 p.m.). For details, please see our Events calendar here and here.
See a little theater at The Burren and the library.
At the Burren (Sat., 3 p.m.), a staged reading of a new adaptation of "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" (widely regarded as the greatest Boston crime novel ever written) will be held (RSVP is required). Meanwhile, the Central Library presents the one-act musical "I Dwell in Possibility" (Sat., 2 p.m.) about the little known friendship between Emily Dickinson and Mabel Loomis Todd. For more info, click here (for "I Dwell…"), or here (for "The Friends…").
