Five Things: Fixing the MBTA, Readers Weigh In

Also, singer Aimee Mann is in Somerville tonight, the finance committee discusses firefighters pay, and open houses at elementary schools.

1) Fixing the MBTA: What Patch readers think
We asked Somerville Patch readers to take a poll about fixing the MBTA's fiscal problems. Should authorities increase fares, cut service, raise the gas tax or none of the above.

As of Wednesday afternoon, about 75 percent of the people who took the poll wanted to raise the gas tax to tackle the T's funding challenges. About 10 percent wanted to rely on fare increases, and about 9 percent wanted to pursue a different course of action altogether. One idea floated was to transfer the MBTA's Big Dig debt—there's about $1.67 billion of it—to the state. The least popular solution was to cut services; only about 5 percent of poll-takers chose that option.

2) Aimee Mann at Somerville Theatre
Singer and songwriter Aimee Mann is playing the Somerville Theatre tonight. The show starts at 7 p.m.

3) Paying for firefighters agreement
The Board of Aldermen's finance committee meets tonight to discuss the financial impact of a recent arbitration decision that awards at least $4.3 million to the city's firefighters. The committee was scheduled to meet about the matter last night, too.

4) Elementary school open houses
Open houses at Somerville's elementary schools continue today and tomorrow. Stop by an elementary school from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to check it out.

5) Weather

There's a chance of snow this afternoon, but no real chance of accumulation. High temperatures will be around 31 degrees.
