Davis Square Polling Location Moves

Residents of Ward 6, Precinct 1 will now vote at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School. They previously voted at the VFW George Dilboy Post.

Somerville residents who live in parts of Davis Square and outside Porter Square will go to a new polling location for the March 6 presidential primary.

The polling place for Ward 6, Precinct 1, which encompasses the neighborhood between Davis Square and Cambridge and a number of streets near Porter Square, is moving to to the John F. Kennedy Elementary School, on Cherry Street near Porter Square.

The Somerville Board of Aldermen approved the move at their meeting on Jan. 26.

The old polling location for that precinct, the Veterans of Foreign Wars George Dilboy Post, at the intersection of Cutter and Somerville avenues, alerted the city it's no longer available to be a polling location, according to Nicholas Salerno, chairman of the Somerville Elections Department, who spoke at the aldermen meeting.

Ward 6, Precinct 1 stretches from Thorndike Street outside Davis Square to Cherry Street near Porter Square. The Kennedy School, because it's on the eastern side of Cherry Street, is technically in Ward 5, Precinct 3 (the western side of Cherry Street is in Ward 6, Precinct 1). According to Salerno, it is legal to have a polling location for one precinct located in an adjacent precinct.

The polling location will be located in the Kennedy School's gym, and the entrance is on the Sartwell Avenue side of the school, Salerno told the board.

For security purposes, part of the gym will be closed off during elections, and a police officer, as is always the case, will be stationed at the poll.

The election department will send postcards to residents of Ward 6, Precinct 1 to inform them about the change in location, Salerno told the Board. He said the city will also make a recorded phone call to residents of that precinct, announce the change on the city website and cable station and place ads in local newspapers.

In addition, Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz plans to alert voters using her newsletter, she said.
