Boston Militia Bench-Clearing Brawl Brought Out State Police

Somerville cops called for backup when 100 women football players got into a fight at Dilboy Stadium.

On Monday, we mentioned a bench-clearing brawl that happened in the fourth quarter of the Boston Militia's recent playoff game against the D.C. Diva, which took place Saturday at Dilboy Stadium.

The Boston Herald has now published a more detailed account of the fight, which brought about 100 players onto the field.

According to the Herald, Somerville police called for backup when things got ugly, and Massachusetts State Police responded to the melee.

A fight between two players apparently started after a play in which a Diva running back broke her leg. During a later play, the Militia got an interception, and it seems a member of the Diva got into a fight with a member of the Militia (see comments below).

When the fight broke out, the benches cleared and a "general scuffle ensured," the Herald reports.

Don't assume The Herald has accurate info! Be better than that.

The fight did not start on the same play as the Diva player breaking her leg. It was a very unfortunate accident, but the Diva player got tripped up on her own player. A few plays later, the clock ran out but Militia went off sides so the Divas were allowed one more play. On that play, the QB threw an interception. At the same time, a Diva WR dragged a Militia CB to their sideline, by her helmet and proceeded to punch and kick her. If it wasn't for the DC coach saving the Militia player, she may still be in the hospital.

Don't depend on other media sources to do your fact-checking for you. You're a Somerville news source, the game was in Somerville --- YOU should be the authoritative news source. I know you have little time and few resources and you do very well with what you have. But you could have done better on this one.

Backseat Coach. Thanks for the comment. The Herald is one of Boston's main newspapers, and its coverage of the incident is worth a read, so I posted about it. As you know, I also posted a short article about the game on Monday. It's linked above. I should note that the main source in the Herald article appears to be Michael Clemmey. president of the team. In the Herald article he said, "The mayhem that broke out was shocking and disappointing.” It seems you disagree with the blow-by-blow account of the fight in the Herald's account, not that the scuffle did happen or that police responded to it.

Militia Maniac. Thank you for your account of what happened. It had been my original understanding that the broken leg and interception were on separate plays, although the Herald reports, "A Militia player picked off a pass during the collision." I will correct the sentence above that implies it happened on the same play. Those occurrences, however, are important, because they help paint a picture of a tough and physical game in which tempers were hot—an atmosphere that, it seems, led to the brawl.

You're very welcome.
But please don't take the president's word as the word of the bible. Although it may seem like it, may not be the most reliable source. Believe it or not, Mr. Backseat Coach has a pretty damn good idea of the game of football and the Militia as a whole.
I do appreciate all the articles you write about the Militia. It is some great publicity! Thank you so much!

Thank you for your response Chris Orchard. It is very much appreciated. In regards to your thoughts on the Herald article, I hope you come to feel that a report that is only partially accurate isn't a very worthwhile one. I have read the Patch's Monday article and will continue to share it with my friends and followers. It is far superior to the article in today's Herald. Thanks for writing it, and for covering the Militia football team.

For those interested, here's another account of the incident, which includes video and an interview with the Militia player who was dragged to the sidelines: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/07/10/brawl-breaks-out-at-womens-pro-football-game-in-somerville/
