As Planned, Somerville Gets More Bike Parking

The city is in the process of installing bike corrals in ten locations. Each corral takes up a parking space and has enough room for 14 bikes.

Bicyclists in Somerville will have an easier time finding a place to lock up their bikes this summer.

After experimenting with the idea last year with two locations—one in Davis Square and one in Union Square—the city's bike corral program has expanded to 10 locations this year.

Most of the corrals are already in place or in the process of being installed, according to an announcement from the city.

Each corral fits in a parking spot on the street and has room for 14 bikes.

"Bicyclists can use the corrals instead of locking their bikes to street signs or parking meters, which reduces congestion on sidewalks and promotes easier access to meters in business districts," the announcement explains.

Union Square will be home to three bike corrals this summer, and there will be at least one corral in each of the city's seven wards, the announcement says.

Somerville received the corrals with a grant from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council.

The bike corrals will be located in the following locations:

  • East Somerville: Broadway at Mudflat Studio
  • Union Square: Near Union Square Plaza
  • Union Square: Somerville Avenue
  • Union Square: Bow Street (outside Block 11 Cafe)
  • Winter Hill: On Broadway
  • Ball Square: On Broadway
  • Magoun Square: On Medford Street
  • Powderhouse Circle: On College Avenue
  • Davis Square: On Elm Street (outside Diesel Cafe)
  • Teele Square: On Broadway, near Masala restaurant

"We chose the locations based on proximity to major destinations and commercial areas, demand for bike and vehicular parking, and proximity to our bike lanes and sharrows," said Sarah Spicer, a senior transportation planner with the city, in the announcement.

Many of the squares with bike corrals—Union Square, Davis Square, Teele Square and Ball Square—will also be home to Hubway bike sharing stations, which could be up and running in Somerville by July.

Thanks for posting, Chris!

Just as an FYI, the location for the Magoun Square corral has been moved to the right side of Olde Magoun's Saloon at 518 Medford Street. Given the parking crunch we have in the heart of the square, it was decided to move it off the street.

Huge thanks to Greg Coughlin, owner of Olde Magoun's Saloon, who gave the side of his buiding for this corral. Previously, he allowed cyclists to bring their bikes in the restaurant if they didn't feel comfortable leaving them out on the street. Greg, along with other 'Gouners, requested bicycle parking recently and it's wonderful to see such a quick response from the City!

There are also bicycle racks on the side of CVS, as well!

This is awesome! Plentiful bike parking in our squares is good for business and good for our streets.
