Are You Giving Up Anything For Lent?
Chocolate. Meat. Facebook. For some Christians, it's the season where luxuries have got to go. Are you changing your habits until Easter hits?
Fat Tuesday is over, which for some means the end of decadence and a renewed focus on the necessities in life. Christians of many denominations participate, and anecdotal evidence suggests that some of the most popular choices for a Lenten sacrifices include chocolate and other sweets. Others also give up tobacco, alcohol, and fried foods.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Boston also encourages folks to give up their time to charities and causes, saying that doing so is especially commendable during Lent. If you're looking for an organization to give your time to, check outour directory listing of charitable and civic organizations on Beacon Hill.
For those of you giving up meat, Patch has plenty of Lenten recipes from around the country, including Atlantic Cod with Spinach, Walnuts, and Tomato Concasse, from the Hamptons, Seafood Paella from Manchester, Missouri, and Shrimp-stuffed Bell Peppers from Reisterstown, Maryland.
However, Patch doesn't have a substitute for every Lenten sacrifice, and, for many folks, giving up something for which there's no easy substitute may be part of purpose for that sacrifice in the first place.
Regardless, let us know why you chose what you did, and drop a line in our comments section with your thoughts on the season so far.
