A Guide to Some of the Best Local Bicycle Blogs

Learn about vintage bikes, do-it-yourself bicycle repair and upcoming group rides, among other topics and news.

Somerville and nearby cities have an enterprising circle of bloggers writing about do-it-yourself bicycle repair, cycling with children, classic bicycles and more.

Here is a list of some of the most intriguing, authoritative and entertaining blogs around:

Biking in Heels: The author, a female architect who lives in Cambridge, has offered tips on looking professional while riding in a heat wave. But she mostly posts photographs of unusual bikes and anecdotes about the things and people she sees while cycling.

Boston Biker: The site hosts nearly 100 blogs on bicycling. It also offers guides for riding in the winter and the rain, using bike lanes and commuting to school. Aspiring bloggers can get a blog through the site for free.

Boston Retro Wheelmen: Learn how to repair, restore and mount accessories to three-speed bicycles and other classics. Recent posts have covered the best dirt roads suitable for vintage bikes in Greater Boston and a step-by-step guide to securing a basket to the front of a bike using special hardware.

Carfree With Kids: Partners Angela and Dorea Vierling-Claassen write about raising their two young children without a car. To get around town, they strap their kids into seats on their cargo bike or take them on the T. The women, both mathematicians, have a large following of like-minded parents. The blog covers how to be a parent in Cambridge and surrounding cities without a car and issues they’ve had doing so, as well as shopping locally and living frugally.

Commonwheels: Members of the Allston bicycle co-op use the blog to organize repair workshops and rides to scenic sites such as Walden Pond and Castle Island.

Geekhouse Bikes: Founder Marty Walsh and others post large photos of custom bicycles that the Allston-based company has built, as well as artistic shots and videos of rides and races that the Geekhouse cycling team has gone on.

Lovely Bicycle!: The Somerville woman behind the blog updates it daily with long posts about the collection of chic vintage bicycles she uses to ride around the city and Cape Cod. She also writes about DIY projects and cycling for transportation and for sport, among many other topics. Her “About” section says the blog is sometimes “frivolous and self-indulgent.”

Visit the site’s “Trading Post” to barter bicycles, bicycle parts or even vintage cameras.

SCUL: An entertaining read for people who both speak or don’t speak the lingo of this bicycle society, which emerged in 1995. Learn about the “ships” (bikes) that the “organized battalion of funk” builds and pilots late at night around Somerville and Greater Boston. SCUL will soon be based in the new location at 10 Tyler St., near Union Square.
