El Sistema Somerville's Music Mentorship Program is designed to provide small-group, personalized interactions that enhance the academic, social, and music growth of students at El Sistema Somerville.
Who can participate? Music Mentors are volunteers who can play a variety of roles at the program, including teaching assistant, academic tutor, classroom monitor, or practice partner. Although El Sistema Somerville is a daily program that teaches ensemble music, we need and seek the skill sets of diverse community mentors, including those without musical training.
What is the time commitment? Mentors should be available to assist at the program at least once a month, but we prefer a weekly commitment if possible. The hours of the program are 2:30-5:30 PM. It is encouraged but not necessary for mentors to be available for the full three hours.
Where is the program located? The program is located at East Somerville Community School, Edgerly Campus; 8 Bonair St., Somerville, MA 02145.
What do I gain from volunteering as a Mentor? Being a Music Mentor makes a difference in the lives of children who need positive role models and caring interactions to succeed fully as students, citizens, and musicians. Taking part in a community service learning project also improves personal satisfaction and self-esteem for the volunteer. For many, the joy of being involved is its own reward.
