Free seminar for parents: "Know the SAT. Understanding College Admissions" June 2nd 2:45pm in Boylston and June 3rd 9:15pm by phone
Ivy
Bound invites area parents of students ages 12 - 16 to one of two seminars next
weekend. "Know the SAT / Understanding College Admissions" will be given at
2:45pm Sunday June 2d in Boylston. A similar phone seminar is available at
9:15pm Sunday throughout the state on a conference call number.
The
focus of the seminar is to prepare parents for what to expect on standardized
tests in the modern College Admissions process. Conducted by one
of Ivy Bound’s Senior Instructors the seminar will answer:
* What is tested on the current ACT / SAT and
how should kids attack it?
* Where does the ACT / SAT fit into the college
admissions scheme?
* Where do the SAT II tests fit in and when
should we schedule these?
* What’s the new Writing test like and how is
it graded?
* Is the ACT / SAT fair? Is it
“coachable”? Is it culturally biased?
* What are AP tests? Who should take these, and
when?
* Don't grades count any
more?
* What's the use of the PSAT?
*
How does Early Decision affect
admissions?
* What else are colleges looking
for?
* How do ACT / SAT scores affect financial aid offers?
*
How do ACT / SAT scores affect athletic
recruitment?
* What are effective ways to prep for the ACT,
SAT, and SAT IIs?
*
Questions and answers
* The Ivy Bound course and how to get the most
out of it.

Ivy Bound /
Rising Scores offers tutoring and ACT / SAT Prep classes in 18 states.
Ivy Bound instructors are primarily college and grad students who have
all scored among the top 1% on the SAT or ACT. Ivy Bound’s
flexibility appeals to many busy students and parents. The group
is able to hold classes in any community and is often invited to hold classes in
schools that have been underserved by some of the larger test prep
organizations. Most Ivy Bound SAT prep classes are held on weekends at schools,
churches, synagogues, & community centers. Ivy Bound also
holds small classes in parents’ homes where a parent or teen
garners students with similar schedules and similar abilities.
Ivy Bound offers private and semi-private tutoring for the SAT, ACT, SAT
II and most AP tests.

SAT prep seems somewhat of an arms race to me, pitting those who can pay for courses like this against people who can't. Although this seminar is free, Ivy Bound seems to be a test prep company offering classes for a fee, like Kaplan and Princeton. (I looked at their website but couldn't find their fee; it said to call for the price, and added that help for the Writing portion of the test is "$400-$750 additional.") Parents of Somerville High students should be aware that Tufts offers a free program of SAT prep/college admissions help called Let's Get Ready for juniors and seniors at SHS. LGR has a good record of raising kids' SAT scores. (Also, MIT offers a weekend class for about $100 for a term through their programs for high school students.) In addition, the Fair Test website lists colleges that have made SATs optional.
