D'Ovidio, Evelyn K, Formerly of Somerville

  • July 20, 2011
  • Deceased's name: Evelyn D'Ovidio
  • Date: July 16, 2011
  • Survived by: Daughter, Teresa D'Ovidio of Somerville; Siblings Barbara Wiberg of Wilmington, Marie Foss of Rockport, Charles Gerrior of Lubbock, TX

She is also survived by many caring nieces and nephews and their families.

The daughter of the late Joseph and Lena Gerrior of Dana Street Somerville. Devoted sister of  the late Edward Gerrior of Dayton, OH.

During her many years in Somerville, Evelyn was a lifelong Girl Scout who went from being a Brownie to eventually teaching others to become troop leaders. She was also very active in the now shuttered Saint Polycarps' church, by helping run the "100" club along with many programs the church offered to young adults and the sick. During this time she opened her door to foster children giving them love and hope for a good life. She is a retiree of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University.

In recent years her love was the Talking Information Network, a radio service that broadcasts the reading of printed material 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for those who are visually impaired and print-handicapped. This service brought the world to her bedside, satisfying her appetite for knowledge, including current news, fiction writing and even the weekly circular.

She would always let us know when canned tomatoes were on sale. Evelyn lead by example never ever speaking a harsh word of criticism or judgement with an endless supply of love, patience and fortitude for everyone she met. The Girl Scout promise and code reads: I will do my best to be: honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout (and all). Evelyn lived by these words everyday.
